16-year-old arrested; planned capturing with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass college capturing that could have included a bombing at Berkeley High College, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division stated in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing damaging gadget supplies and threatening to commit a crime which will lead to death or great bodily harm.

Police mentioned they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a pupil at Berkeley Excessive School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they discovered elements to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and electronic gadgets that could be used to create further weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"College safety remains a high precedence for the division," police stated in a statement. 

Particulars on whom the teenager was trying to recruit were not disclosed. Police stated this case stays under investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens told the college's group that the district was in shut contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon parts, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing threat to its schools. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this era, we alerted our administrative and safety workers about this investigation and, as is our normal practice, maintained close contact with our BPD Faculty Resource Officer on the Berkeley High College campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation period, we had been assured that this particular person did not pose a direct risk to the Berkeley Excessive School community."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district may pursue disciplinary action against the student. 

In addition, a city corridor meeting titled: 'How you can Talk to Youngsters About College Violence' offered by Alameda County Workplace of Education is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
