16-year-old arrested; planned capturing with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass school capturing that would have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive College, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division mentioned in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful system materials and threatening to commit against the law which can lead to dying or nice bodily injury.

Police mentioned they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a capturing that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teenager was a scholar at Berkeley Excessive School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they found elements to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and digital objects that may very well be used to create additional weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"Faculty safety remains a excessive precedence for the division," police said in an announcement. 

Particulars on whom the teenager was making an attempt to recruit were not disclosed. Police stated this case stays under investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens informed the school's community that the district was in shut contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon elements, the district relied on police experience to assess any potential ongoing threat to its schools. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this period, we alerted our administrative and safety staff about this investigation and, as is our commonplace follow, maintained shut contact with our BPD School Resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive Faculty campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation period, we were assured that this individual didn't pose an instantaneous threat to the Berkeley High College neighborhood."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district could pursue disciplinary action in opposition to the student.
