The coverage, disclosed in leaked emails Musk despatched to Tesla's government workers Tuesday, was first reported by electric automobile news web site Electrek.

"Anybody who wishes to do distant work have to be within the workplace for a minimum (and I mean *minimum*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla. This is lower than we ask of manufacturing unit staff," Musk wrote, including that the workplace should be the worker's major workplace where the other staff they recurrently work together with are based mostly — "not a distant department office unrelated to the job duties."

Musk said he would personally assessment any request for exemption from the policy, but that for essentially the most half, "If you don't present up, we are going to assume you have resigned."

Tesla (TSLA) didn't reply to a request for comment on the policy change, however Musk appeared to substantiate it in a tweet of his personal early Wednesday when requested on Twitter, "Hey Elon...any extra remark to individuals who think coming into work is an antiquated concept?" Musk replied: "They should fake to work some other place."The policy is completely at odds with that of the other tech company Musk is attempting to buy, Twitter (TWTR), which has beforehand introduced employees can continue to earn a living from home "eternally" if they like. "Wherever you feel best and creative is where you'll work and that includes working from residence full-time without end," CEO Parag Agrawal wrote in a notice to Twitter's nearly 100,000 workers in March, simply before Musk's interest in proudly owning the social media platform was disclosed. At Tesla, however, that won't be the case. It is especially vital that senior managers be seen within the office, Musk said, including that was one of the reasons he primarily lived on the Tesla manufacturing facility in Fremont, California, when the company was struggling to increase manufacturing in 2017 and 2018.

"If I had not performed that, Tesla would long ago have gone bankrupt," he wrote. "There are in fact companies that do not require this, but when was the last time they shipped a fantastic new product? It's been some time."

He added, "Tesla has and can create and truly manufacture the most thrilling and significant products of any company on Earth," he added. "This is not going to happen by phoning it in."

Surveys show the vast majority of workplace workers favor the option to work at home. Since reopening offices following Covid-19 shutdowns, many companies past Twitter have introduced increased flexibility for employees who wish to work remotely, partly as a technique to retain or appeal to talent in a particularly tight labor market. But the world's richest person doesn't seem concerned about that dynamic.
