The policy, disclosed in leaked emails Musk sent to Tesla's executive employees Tuesday, was first reported by electric car information website Electrek.

"Anyone who wishes to do remote work should be in the office for a minimum (and I mean *minimal*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla. That is less than we ask of manufacturing unit workers," Musk wrote, adding that the workplace must be the worker's primary workplace where the opposite employees they commonly interact with are based mostly — "not a remote branch workplace unrelated to the job duties."

Musk stated he would personally overview any request for exemption from the policy, but that for probably the most half, "In case you do not show up, we'll assume you've resigned."

Tesla (TSLA) did not reply to a request for comment on the coverage change, but Musk appeared to confirm it in a tweet of his own early Wednesday when requested on Twitter, "Hey Elon...any further comment to individuals who think coming into work is an antiquated idea?" Musk replied: "They should fake to work someplace else."The coverage is completely at odds with that of the opposite tech company Musk is attempting to purchase, Twitter (TWTR), which has previously announced employees can proceed to do business from home "without end" if they like. "Wherever you are feeling most productive and inventive is the place you will work and that includes working from house full-time without end," CEO Parag Agrawal wrote in a note to Twitter's practically 100,000 staff in March, simply before Musk's interest in owning the social media platform was disclosed. At Tesla, nonetheless, that won't be the case. It's especially important that senior managers be seen within the workplace, Musk mentioned, including that was one of the reasons he essentially lived on the Tesla manufacturing unit in Fremont, California, when the company was struggling to extend manufacturing in 2017 and 2018.

"If I had not executed that, Tesla would way back have gone bankrupt," he wrote. "There are after all companies that don't require this, however when was the final time they shipped an ideal new product? It's been some time."

He added, "Tesla has and can create and really manufacture essentially the most exciting and significant merchandise of any firm on Earth," he added. "This will not happen by phoning it in."

Surveys show nearly all of workplace workers choose the option to work at home. Since reopening offices following Covid-19 shutdowns, many companies beyond Twitter have introduced elevated flexibility for employees who need to work remotely, partly as a solution to retain or entice talent in a very tight labor market. But the world's richest individual doesn't appear involved about that dynamic.
