In the course of the Uvalde shooting, an off-duty federal agent’s wife texted him for help. “I asked my barber if he had a gun,” he said.

Jacob Albarado was in his barber's chair when both males obtained text messages about the taking pictures unfolding at Robb Elementary College in Uvalde, Texas, last week. "There's an energetic shooter. Help. Love you," Albarado's spouse Trisha stated in three messages at 11:41 a.m.

She's a fourth grade instructor at the college, and their daughter is a student there.

"I requested my barber if he had a gun," Albarado, a U.S. Customs and Border Safety agent, advised CBS News on Wednesday. He had attended an awards ceremony at the faculty earlier that morning and was off responsibility, with his weapon at house.

The barber did have a gun. Albarado took it, a shotgun, and they rushed to the chaotic scene. Law enforcement officials have been already there, and Albarado started serving to.

"Children are coming out the windows," he mentioned.

With people fleeing to a funeral house throughout the street, Albarado said he needed to get inside the college as fast as he may.

"I was appearing as a husband and a father," he stated.

His spouse let him know she made it to the funeral home, but she informed him their daughter was locked in a faculty restroom.

"I did not know what restroom," Albarado stated.

He eventually discovered his daughter was in a restroom positioned inside her classroom. Albarado met up with two officers near the classroom.

"We need to get the youngsters out of here," Albarado stated he advised the officers. "… The shooter's over there. We have to get the kids out. That is our time."

The officers started opening classroom doors, and Albarado mentioned he guided individuals to safety.

"First classroom, second classroom, third classroom, noticed my daughter," Albarado stated. "Reduction. Large relief."

He hugged and kissed her, and soon she was heading to the college parking lot.

Whereas Border Patrol agents had been on the workforce that breached the classroom where the gunman was holed up, Albarado wasn't in that group.

"I did not have my gear, and so it would not have been a good move for me to get into the building," he said. "I didn't have my vest. A shotgun's not a ok protection."

Throughout a press conference last week, the pinnacle of the Texas Division of Public Safety stated the school district's police chief did not initially send officers into the classroom where the gunman was positioned as a result of he thought it was now not an active-shooter scenario. The U.S. Justice Department is conducting a assessment of the police response.

For his half, Albarado stated he wasn't in a position to evaluate the response.

"I know my fellow officers," he stated, "and … to me, heart of hearts, I consider they were doing all the things of their power they could do."
